WHAT IS CMP?

Corrugated metal pipe (CMP) is typically used in applications such as culverts, stormwater systems, drainage systems, and small bridges. However, CMP is not limited to these areas. This pipe's versatility enables workers to use it across various fields. It ranges in size from 6 to 72 inches in diameter and 10 to 20 feet long, so there is an option for almost every project that requires piping.

At Daniel B. Krieg, we also apply a two-ounce per square foot zinc coating to the steel, adding a thickness of .0017 inches on each side. The protective coating reduces maintenance costs and results in fewer replacements because the galvanization process protects the pipe from rusting and extends its life expectancy to over 50 years.

Advantages of Using Corrugated Metal Pipe

Industry professionals and homeowners look to CMP as a reliable form of metal piping. CMP gives you several advantages, which explains why the material is a popular option for individuals with all levels of experience. The main benefits of CMP include:

  • Better economics : Due to lower installation costs and higher durability, CMP is the most economical pipe solution for both initial and total life duration costs
  • Extended lifespan : The zinc coating on CMP results in a service life of 50+ years, which means you don't have to worry about frequent replacement or high maintenance fees.
  • Improved performance : Corrugated metal pipe is known for its high strength, versatility and hydraulic capabilities compared to other solutions on the market. Place CMP products underneath road systems, knowing there is a reduced risk of cracking.
  • Solid strength-to-weight ratio : The lightweight characteristics of CMP make it easy to transport to remote job sites.
  • Higher sustainability : Corrugated metal pipes contain as much as 83% recycled content, making them an eco-friendly and LEED-friendly option for your project. Using CMP also has less environmental impact than other pipes because it reduces the need for gravel, sand and cement for installation.

How to Install a Corrugated Metal Pipe

It's crucial to install CMP products at the start of a drainage outlet. Liquids should move upstream with CMP being supported along connections thanks to joints that are no larger than one inch. The full process of installing corrugated metal pipes is outlined below.

1. Incorporate Bedding and Structural Backfill

Choose a backfill material that does not contain organic or corrosive material, rock fragments or plastic clay chunks larger than 2.5 inches in thickness. You should plan on placing at least four inches of bedding material to sit underneath the CMP. Ensure the bedding material is loosely packed.

Place the structural backfill material in lifts no higher than eight inches. Structural backfill must sit underneath the haunches of the CMP and be raised evenly from the left and right sides. Side-to-side backfill differentials must stay below 24 inches or one-third of the rise of the structure — the smaller measurement is the one to go with.

After placing the pipe, note that you should have a minimum of one foot of backfill material covering the top of the CMP.

2. Create a Trench

Determine the smallest width possible for trench installation. You will need to wait to create a trench until bedding materials are in place and properly formed across a foundation.

A rule of thumb for trench widths is that this measurement should be more than 1.25 times the pipe span with an additional one foot tacked on.

3. Make and Assess Your Embankment

The structural backfill has to reach an elevation that is no less than the suggested invert plus 1/2 the CMP's rise. This includes a width of two pipe spans on the left and right sides of the CMP.

4. Position Construction Covers Over CMP

Your team must use adequate construction covers to protect piping before further construction can begin and vehicles can drive over the work site. Consider the span of the CMP to determine the maximum load your connections can handle safely.

5. Connect Additional Pipe Runs

Follow identical backfilling procedures for CMP connections running away from main drainage outlets. Pay attention to the pipe diameter and pipe-arch span and investigate minimum spacing requirements based on your industry.

CMP Perforated Pipe Specifications

Corrugated metal pipe perforations fall into two distinct categories — Class One and Class Two groups.

Class One Perforated Pipes

A Class One CMP perforation is intended for subsurface drainage applications. An unperforated segment above the invert becomes a flow channel. Pipes in this category are partially perforated with at least 3/8-inch slots made in rows that are in line with a pipe's axis. There is a single perforation in every row for every corrugation.

Class Two Perforated Pipes

A Class Two corrugated metal pipe is fully perforated. These installations are multipurpose for the subsurface disposal of liquids as well as subsurface drainage. Class Two CMPs are commonly associated with groundwater recharge systems since openings across the pipes allow for water to seep into the ground and any excess to move to a different location.

For a pipe to fall under the Class Two category, there should be at least 30 perforations for each square foot of surface area.
