Tack Coat

A crucial component of a quality paving project is tack coat. At Daniel B. Krieg, we have bulk storage for tack coat at our Harrisburg location, where it is available for sale to our customers. We also have a fleet of asphalt distributor trucks, and experienced drivers, that you can hire to apply tack coat on your project. All of our tack coat material is PennDOT tested and certified.

D.B. Krieg tack coat truck

Tack coat is vital to the structural performance and safety of pavement. What exactly is tack coat? Tack coat is an asphalt emulsion that is sprayed on an existing paved surface in order to create a “bond” between old and new pavement layers. This “bond” ensures the appropriate transmission of traffic loads, and prevents slippage between pavement layers. This means less cracking, debonding, and fatigue failure of your pavement, which ultimately extends the life of the pavement and saves the owner money.

When and How to Apply

You need an experienced tack coat service team to properly apply this material. Tack coat needs to be uniformly applied over the entire pavement surface immediately prior to placing new pavement. The surface must be clean and dry in order to ensure a strong bond (you do not want the tack coat to bond to any dirt or dust, rather than the pavement layers.)

Daniel B. Krieg is able to ensure uniform coverage of material with our fleet of distributor trucks, which are equipped with computerized rate control. This system maintains the desired application rate regardless of distributor speed, bar width, or transmission gear change during operation. Precise application rates within .01 gallon +/- per square yard are achieved.

Once the tack coat is applied, it will take a few minutes for the material to become “tacky.” It is important that traffic is not permitted to drive directly on the tack coat. The tack coat needs to be given the appropriate amount of time to cure before applying the next layer of HMA (hot mix asphalt.)

Tack Coat vs. Prime Coat

Tack coat and prime coat are two distinctly different materials. In other words, one does not replace the other. Please refer to the “Prime Coat” section of our Services page to read more about Prime Coat.

Why D. B. Krieg?

We have more than 80 years of experience in serving Central Pennsylvania, as well as many other counties throughout the Keystone State. Prime Coat

The main purpose of prime coat is to protect the granular base during construction by providing a temporary waterproofing layer. Prime coat also stabilizes and binds surface particles together, and can be used to control dust if the base will be used for temporary traffic. Prime coat is not a “glue” and should not be confused with tack coat.

At Daniel B. Krieg, we apply E-1 prime and AE-P prime according to PennDOT 408 specifications. After application, we advise that you should not disturb the prime coat, and allow the bituminous material to penetrate the surface.

The Benefits of Prime Coat

This dust-limiting treatment is a mixture of the following:

  • Water
  • Stoddard Solvent
  • Polymer Modifier
  • Cationic Emulsifier
  • Sulfur Compounds
  • Asphalt
  • Hydrogen Sulfide

This mixture is proven to act as a temporary waterproofing layer. The key to successful prime coat is allowing it enough time to cure and reach the base. After waiting 24 hours, if any prime coat hasn’t been fully absorbed, you can take measures to blot with sand and fully remove before continuing your project.

Prime Coat vs. Tack Coat

There’s often confusion between prime coat and tack coat, which is understandable. The two treatments sound similar, so many people think they’re also interchangeable. Both prime coat and tack coat are vital treatments that create separate benefits. While prime coat is applied to a base in order to temporarily seal and protect it from the elements, tack coat is applied between HMA (hot mix asphalt) pavement layers to bond the old and new layers together. When appropriate, the use of both prime coat and tack coat ensures that you will enjoy maximum value from your paved surfaces.

J-Band®

Daniel B. Krieg is proud to be an Experienced Applicator of J-Band® material. J-Band® is a Longitudinal Joint Sealant (LJS) or Void Reducing Asphalt Membrane (VRAM) that significantly reduces air voids in longitudinal joints from the bottom up — literally. J-Band® not only extends the life of a pavement joint, but it also improves the performance of the entire pavement.

How does it work?

J-Band® is applied immediately prior to paving, as part of the normal HMA construction process. Using a spray bar, J-Band® covers an area 12 or 18 inches wide on top of existing pavement and under the location of the eventual longitudinal joint. This material is fast-acting! In 30 minutes or less, the road can be ready for traffic. Unlike other joint treatments which are applied top-down, J-Band® migrates upward, filling voids and fighting off air and water. On the average roadway, every $1 invested in J-Band® typically saves agencies $2 in avoided and deferred maintenance costs.

Rubberized Joint Sealing

Once paving is completed, new joints need to be sealed with a hot rubberized sealant to protect the new pavement from water infiltration and other deterioration. Our experienced crews are able to complete up to 20 miles of rubberized joint sealing per mobilization. We have a fleet of (3) 400 gallon hot oil jacketed Crafco EZ1500 kettles to complete sealing operations efficiently. At DB Krieg, we seal over 2 million feet of joints per year for PennDOT, the PA Turnpike, and local municipalities. Check out videos below of our crews in action:

Our highly experienced employees have commendable levels of experience, and our specialized equipment is capable of spraying miles of seams per hour in a moving pattern. This equipment includes two 600-gallon trucks, a 1,000-gallon truck with dual steer, a 2,000-gallon computerized distributor, a 170-gallon ride-on unit, and a trailer-mounted attenuator with arrowboard. This equipment gives us the capability to quickly and effectively apply AC-20 sealant for your project.

At Daniel B. Krieg, we also have bulk storage for AC-20 at our Harrisburg location, where it is available for sale to our customers. All of our AC-20 material is PennDOT tested and certified.

What Is AC-20 Sealant?

AC-20 sealant (sometimes referred to as “PG Grade” asphalt) is used to seal longitudinal pavement joints like Michigan joints, seams, vertical barriers, curb, and more. AC-20 is popular in the paving industry due to its effectiveness and ease of application.

At DB Krieg, we use a variety of materials and treatments to ensure that your surfaces enjoy their maximum lifespans and that you save money on maintenance costs. For longitudinal pavement joints and curb sealing, we recommend AC-20 as a highly effective material.

Why AC-20 Sealing?

Nothing destroys a roadway more quickly than water damage. This is especially true and important in Pennsylvania and Maryland, where wet conditions and snowy, icy winters can wreak havoc on pavement surfaces.

AC-20 is an asphalt material that fills joints, preventing water damage — specifically in longitudinal pavement joints that require special treatment for protection. The many benefits of AC-20 include:

  • Prevention of water intrusion
  • Reduces the formation of future cracks
  • Cost-savings compared to cost of full surface replacement
  • Increased ride comfort for auto passengers

AC-20 sealing can be viewed as a cost-effective solution that helps extend the life of your pavement and creates a safer, smoother ride for passengers.

Be sure to hire an experienced service provider when searching for AC-20 sealing. We serve Harrisburg, Lancaster, Hershey, York, Chambersburg, Lebanon and other Central Pennsylvania communities, stretching all the way to Frederick and Baltimore, MD.

Hot Rubberized Crack Filling

Crack filling is the most economical way to extend your pavement life and save you money in the long run. At Daniel B. Krieg, we stock a variety of crack filler material at our Harrisburg and York locations, where it is available for sale to our customers. Or, if you would prefer to leave your crack filling needs in the hands of experts, you can hire our crew to do the work for you! At DB Krieg, we have the experienced employees and advanced equipment necessary to get your crack filling job done right.

What causes the formation of pavement cracks? The sun’s ultraviolet rays bake the essential strength & flexibility properties out of asphalt, leaving it brittle and full of hairline cracks that make the surface vulnerable to water invasion. Water penetration from rain and snow enlarges hairline cracks and seasonal freeze/thaw cycles continue to add to the breakdown. Without crack filling, your pavement cracks will continue to grow until they turn into potholes. Once your pavement’s subbase fails, you will need to fully replace your pavement, which is very expensive.

The good news is that, while pavement cracks cannot be completely avoided, they can be slowed down significantly by crack filling on an annual basis. At Daniel B. Krieg, our experienced employees use state-of-the art equipment and PennDOT certified hot, rubberized sealant to protect your cracks.

Why Hot Rubberized Crack Filling?

Hot rubberized crack filling delivers the following benefits:

  • Moisture prevention
  • Expansion and contraction with pavement cracks
  • Longer surface lifespans
  • Cost savings
  • Enhanced surface appearance

Many wonder about the timing and frequency of crack filling. We recommend filling a crack when it grows larger than a quarter inch and within one season of the crack first appearing. After the initial filling, the crack should be readdressed annually.

Once a crack grows larger than an inch, it must be filled with blacktop. Unfortunately, alligator cracks cannot be filled because they are signs that pavement can no longer support the weight of traffic.

Our Crack-Filling Process

Successful hot rubberized crack filling requires specific tools and equipment. At Daniel B. Krieg, we use Crafco and Cimline oil jacketed melters/applicators and 185 CFM air compressors to clean & fill your pavement cracks. All of our crack filling is done to PennDOT 408 specifications.

Our process begins with cleaning moisture and debris out of cracks. We make sure each crack is fully cleaned using our high-pressure air compressors. This creates the clean reservoir needed for the sealant to bond. We then fill cracks to the fullest depth using our PennDOT approved hot rubberized crack sealant.

Crack filling can typically be completed anytime between April and November in our region, as long as the pavement is completely dry so that the material can adhere. Traffic will need to avoid the filled crack for about 20 minutes after application. While hot rubberized crack filling won’t make your paved surface look new, it will extend its life and help it function at a higher level. Most importantly, crack filling will save you significant money in the long run.

Crack Filling – Common Questions

Many roadway operators and managers have questions about crack filling. Here are the most common questions we receive from our customers.

When Should I Crack fill?

A crack should be filled when it grows larger than a quarter of an inch. Crack filling season typically spans from April to November in this region because of the favorable weather conditions, but a crack is best filled within one season of its formation. After the initial filling, a crack should be monitored annually to make sure it gets re-filled once it opens back up.

Unfortunately, alligator cracks cannot be filled because they indicate pavement subbase failure — which requires pavement repair/replacement. Also, cracks that grow larger than an inch can no longer be filled with hot rubber. They require blacktop, or a Mastic material, for filling.

Why Treat Cracks?

You should treat cracks to prevent water from entering and weakening the subbase. Also, crack filling prevents dirt, debris, and other material from entering cracks. The combination of moisture and debris is particularly harmful to surfaces. Once trapped in cracks, debris is shifted around in the crack, creating more damage.

Pavement cracks lead to potholes, which can frustrate people who drive over the surface. Pavement cracks also shorten the lifespan of the surface, causing significant cost implications for management and operators who will have to invest largely in surface replacement rather than the smaller investment in crack filling.

What Cracks Should Be filled?

Crack width should be ¼" – 1". Cracks over 1" should be filled with blacktop or Mastic. The earlier you can catch a crack, the better for filling. All cracks grow over time, with the materials and cost needed to fill them growing in direct proportion to the size of the crack. Fill small cracks before they grow into large cracks, and fill large cracks before they grow into potholes.

What Cracks Shouldn't Be Filled?

Alligator cracks must be repaved, not crack filled. This is for the safety of traffic and the maximum usable life of the surface in question.

How Long Should It Last?

Crack filling should last 3–5 years, depending on weather conditions. However, cracks should be monitored on an annual basis, as brand new cracks are always forming, and older cracks may re-open and need re-filled. When compared to the cost of fully repaving a surface, crack filling represents a significant cost benefit to the Owner of the surface.

What Is the Crack Filling Process?

Daniel B. Krieg completes all of our crack filling according to PennDOT 408 specifications. We have completed millions of LF of crack filling and joint sealing for our customers, and have the experience needed to get your job done right.

Crack filling includes two important steps. First, cracks must be cleared and cleaned. We clean your cracks out with 185 CFM compressed air, which ensures that the new crack filler material will stay in place and not be negatively affected by rock, debris, or vegetation.

Next, the crack is filled with our PennDOT certified rubberized crack sealant, using our high capacity oil jacketed kettles. The crack filler material cools quickly and is ready for traffic in a matter of moments.

At DB Krieg, we serve as your fully insured, PennDOT prequalified option for crack filling. With more than 90 years of experience, we have the tools, resources and knowledge needed to help you make the most of your investment. Our crack filling materials meet the most rigorous testing standards, and our A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau is an indication of our success in serving a wide range of customers — including the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, PennDOT, local municipalities, commercial parking lot customers and others.

GSB-88®
Gilsonite Sealer-Binder Rejuvenator Emulsion

Daniel B. Krieg, Inc. is proud to be one of only two approved GSB-88® applicators in the state of Pennsylvania. GSB-88®, manufactured by Asphalt Systems Inc., is an environmentally safe and simple way to reverse the effects of oxidation, raveling, and the normal aging process of highways, streets, airport taxiways and parking aprons. It includes cationic emulsion of Gilsonite ore and specially selected plasticizers — a combination that helps rejuvenate and protect your asphalt pavement.

Why GSB-88®?

Paved surfaces are designed to take a beating. They take a beating from sun, wind, rain, snow and other natural elements, and they also take a beating from traffic.
