Prime coat is an asphalt emulsion applied to a prepared granular base, such as crushed stone or aggregate, commonly used on highway shoulders or as a base for roadway construction. Prime coat is also used for dust control. At Daniel B. Krieg, Inc., we apply PennDOT Bulletin 15-approved prime coat material using our computerized asphalt distributor trucks.

Longitudinal joints, also known as the joints where asphalt lanes meet, are prone to high air voids, leading to water damage, cracking, and failure within 4-5 years. J-Band^®, a polymer-modified asphalt emulsion, fills voids during paving compaction, creating a dense, impermeable seal. This reduces permeability, strengthens bonds, and extends joint life to 15+ years, enhancing pavement durability, cutting maintenance, and improving safety.

J-Band^® is a specialized void-reducing asphalt membrane (VRAM), also known as a longitudinal joint sealant (LJS) in some regions, designed specifically for hot-mix asphalt (HMA) pavement construction. It’s applied as a thin band (typically 12-18 inches wide) directly onto the existing pavement surface immediately before laying the new asphalt layer, right under the intended location of the longitudinal joint. This application integrates seamlessly into standard paving processes, with the material ready for construction traffic in as little as 30 minutes

Once paving is completed, new joints need to be sealed with hot rubberized sealant to protect the new joint from water infiltration and other deterioration. Our experienced crews are able to complete up to 20 miles of rubberized joint sealing per mobilization. We have a fleet of (3) 400 gallon hot oil jacketed Crafco EZ1500 kettles to complete sealing operations efficiently. At Daniel B. Krieg, Inc. we seal over 3 million feet of joints per year for PennDOT, the PA Turnpike, and local municipalities.
